Boris and the Rusalka

from Basically Blue, vol. 1 by Longboat

lyrics

Deep in the woods where no one roams
There stands a pond like in olden poems
Its waters shimmer all the day long
There sounds a distant song

Stumbling into this sylvan glade
Simple Boris worn and frayed
He found a tree and rested there when
A voice filled the air

Handsome noble
I’ve a secret
I’ll tell you
Just come to
The water’s edge

Boris was poor but not so dumb
He knew where the song was coming from
The Rusalka, fair and blond, she
Beckoned from the pond

Handsome noble
I’ve a secret
I’ll tell you
Just come to
The water’s edge

So then he rose and did advance
Straight towards the water like in a trance
Slow and solemn like a bridegroom
While she sang her tune

Handsome noble
Won’t you join me?
Sorrow’s daughter
Trapped in water
For all eternity

She said to the approaching Boris: “My secret is that I died in this pond many years ago. A man was my undoing. And I am condemned to drown any who happens by. Come to me.”
She lunged at him, but clever Boris dropped his ruse and grabbed her arm, pulling with all of his might. The Rusalka came out of the water and onto the land. With a wail of surprise, the beautiful maid immediately dissolved into green slime. A glimmer caught Boris’ eye and he picked a large blood-red ruby out of her remains. Long years of cursed lonely sadness had formed the stone within her.

Boris left the glade with the valuable gem and traveled day and night to the nearest town. There, he became a wealthy merchant, married a beautiful countess and wisely advised the tsar on a variety of important matters.
